Arkansas Senior Photographer Tips: What to Wear for Senior Guys

As an Arkansas Senior Photographer, the majority of my senior clients have been guys! I think that is partly because of my own two former senior boys, and their friends, who launched my photography business! Each year, the larger percentage of senior sessions that I take are for guys, and I love it! I have had the most laid back, kind, and easy going senior guy clients. My favorite quote ever is when guys say, “this was actually kinda fun.” Usually, senior boys don’t have much of a vision for their session. They are trying to please mom and give her the pictures that she will cherish while they head off doing the next thing! So, Arkansas Senior Boys (or moms), let me help you plan what to wear!

Keep it Real

The best photos always happen when you’re comfortable. Skip anything that feel forced. Choose outfits that fit well, match your vibe – whether that is sporty, laid-back, or polished. Maybe avoid something that is overly worn or has become your Saturday lounge outfit, pj’s, or yard work clothes. Even though these may be super comfy, they may give the “tired and worn out” vibe in photos. Moms this is where you let your boy wear that hat he loves, the favorite T, or the beloved hoodie.

Athletic Touch

Show off your Arkansas school pride with a letterman jacket or team jersey. These pieces will make your photos personal and unique.

Master the Layer Game

Layering adds depth and dimension to your photos. Try a flannel over a tee or hoodie, vests, or jackets.

Add Props

Sometimes when guys hear the word, “prop” they envision cheese-y. Props do not have to be cheesy, but they add in some of your interests and personality. They also give you something to do with your hands. Props add variety to your Gallery!

Suit Up for Impact

If I had a dollar for every time a senior guy has told me, “I never wear suits”, I could retire right now! Of course you don’t! I also never see girls wearing their prom dresses to school either, but that’s not the point. Nothing says confidence like a well-fitted suit or blazer. Suits add so much depth, polish, and refinery to your Gallery. Your mom already let you wear your backwards hat and baseball jersey, now it is your turn to give her a gift by wearing that suit she dropped $ for. Suits are perfect for urban backdrops like the Bentonville or Fayetteville Square, Crystal Bridges, or The Momentary. Suits will never go out of style and will be timeless in your photos.

When one of my boys was a senior in 2024, I bribed him to wear his suit. I told him that I would set a timer for 10 minutes and if he gave me 10 minutes, he could go play basketball for the rest of the day. He begrudgingly obliged (he also may have had his wisdom teeth recently taken out- sorry buddy!) and they turned out to be my most favorite images of him.

Other Details to Consider:

Details Matter

A watch or belt can pull your outfit together. Shoes should be clean and match your vibe and style. Fresh hair cut (5 days before) and grooming make a huge difference. Don’t forget your socks- this happens a lot! Lay out all your outfits the night before and make sure you have everything. I have had guys forget their dress shoes multiple times, much to their mom’s dismay!

Quick Tips

Bring 3 outfits for variety. Make sure your clothes fit well and are wrinkle free. If you have a pet, lint roll your clothing!
